What is a Math Olympiad?

A math olympiad is a competition where students participate to showcase their skills in solving mathematical problems. Competitions can be grouped by age and/or geographically--regionally, nationally or internationally. The more selective competitions require that students be prequalified based on performance on lower level competitions.

  • At 4Schoolers, we strongly believe that participating in math competitions is a great opportunity to explore and boost your interest in mathematics. Participating in math olympiads provides a variety of benefits that will not only allow students to perform at the highest level on college entry level exams like the SAT and ACT, but will provide a skill set that improves problem solving skills, enhances creativity and prepares students to better deal with failure and success as well as better handle pressure.

High-level math Olympiads require students to not only solve a problem but also to explain and prove solutions for correctness. In addition, students will hone time-management and self-assessment skills. During math contests, it is crucial to keep track of time and assess your abilities in order not to waste time on tasks that you are not prepared for.
Participating in math contests will allow students to master mathematics, and understand the concepts on a deep level, which results in exceptional performances in advanced math classes at school as well as standardized tests. Many of 4Schoolers' students who took competitive math classes dramatically improved their SAT Tests scores in math.

  • 4Schoolers has designed a special Competitive Math program for students who have an interest in math. The program prepares students for the AMC 8/10/12, the entry level mathematical contests in American Mathematics Competitions series. Participation in AMC 8, AMC 10, and AMC 12 is open to any student at the appropriate grade level. Students with exceptional performance on AMC 10/12 are invited to the next level competition: American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), which is a prerequisite for USAMO and USAJMO (USA Mathematical Olympiad and USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad), the most prestigious math contests in the country.

The aim of 4Schoolers’ Competitive Math program is to equip students to score in the top 5% at AMC 12 and top 2.5% at AMC 10 in order to qualify for participation in AIME and help with further preparation to this competition. A solid performance on AIME is an honorable achievement which strengthens a students candidacy for highly selective institutions.

  • What probably even more important than all these benefits we told you about, is that competitive math gives students a lot of incredible emotions. Throughout competitive math experience students dive in an wonderful atmosphere of highly motivated, intelligent, and passionate people. And this community then becomes those students’ second family where they share their interests, their successes and failures, and their brilliant ideas.

Competitive math is a great opportunity even for those who feel like they are not interested in math. That is because they studied this science only at school, but competitive math is very-very different from it. Unbelievable? Take 4Schoolers' competitive math classes, and we would prove it to you. Chances are that you would fall in love with it. Mathematics is a gorgeous science with a hidden indescribable beauty in it, and math competitions open students’ eyes so that they could see this beauty.
